change that comes through time

Ever run into someone later in life and just think, "wow, the times have sure changed." It happened to me last night. I ran into a girl from highschool that I once had a thing for. I was turned down, which didn't surprise me considering my "social position" in highschool. I wasn't exactly running with the "in crowd", and she was definately running with that crowd. Again it's no surprise, she is a beautiful girl with a wonderful singing voice, not to mention very intelligent.
To get back on track, I sat down with a friend and family at one of my old favorite restaurants, and she was our waitress. Still beatiful, and I imagine, still with the great voice. She wasn't going to her university anymore, she came back to go to community college and work at this particular restaurant. So here she was, star in highschool, with guys hanging on her every word, to a waitress living with her parents going to community college. And there I was, chubby bank geek in highschool, to a 70 lb lighter, member of the airforce with my own apartment, steady paycheck and no college debt at all.
I didn't gloat openly, I didn't even elude to it. I didn't really want to, because it was enough for me just to know that times changes all things and people. I saw a jock from highschool the other day, one of the tormentors from my past. Now I say, "we have three inbound at cooridinates........." and he says "would you like fries with that?". It's nice knowing that the underdogs don't stay that way.
Ladies be nice to all the guys in the "out" crowd, because they usually turn out better than those "boys on the inside". And guys, be nice to nerds, you will work for them someday.

Very nice article, perrinwlf. It's interesting to see how this happens, isn't it? I don't have any intention of going to my high school reunions, but if I did, I'm sure I'd see much of the same. The losers in high school ofttimes turn out the most successful, and those who truly succeeded in high school are often trapped there. I'm reminded of Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite . . . still stuck back in '82, throwing the right pass that time, unable to move on with his life.
